The mucosa (mucous layer) of the |cervix| is similar to the mucosa of the upper |uterus|. The ~mucous~ lining of the |cervix|, unlike that of the upper |uterus|, takes no part in menstruation and is not shed during the destructive, or last, phase of menstruation.
